Acquisition 3: Duality

I quit my job and went back to school to get my degree in psychology – of course. The class that did more to open my eyes to the human condition than any other single thing in my life was social psychology (take a breath!). It’s been around for a long time, but I had never been exposed to it before. I learned some very interesting things. I knew that I hadn’t learned yet what I was trying to learn. I didn’t know what it was – it was just out of reach.

Then I started reading the blogs of some “skeptics”. They are college professors who are atheists, and they are really mean. I still won’t link to them because I am really afraid of them. They really are mean. But they did make some good points.

While my disbelief in the three Abrahamic religions comes from the people among their flocks, these atheists’ disbelief stems from science. They talk a lot about evolution and how it proves religion wrong. I don’t know, I think evolution proves that the creation story is wrong, but how does it prove all spirituality wrong, as they assert?

I took a pseudoscience class this summer, and learned how to tell the difference between using evidence to understand the natural world and knowing truth through the metaphysical world. I learned what psychological factors account for superstitious belief and how credulity lends itself to strange ideas. I also learned where the duality we feel comes from. Michael Shermer has written some books on why people believe weird things, and one of the topics he writes about is abduction stories and what psychological/physiological factors contribute to popular cultural myths.

One of the physiological factors he discusses is sleep paralysis, a condition I have been inflicted with since I was about 10 years old (about the time my body started to change). It can be, and often is, an extremely terrifying experience. My mother spoke of having similar experiences, but when I discussed it with other people, they thought I was crazy. But, I’m not.

The sensations tend to be the same no matter who experiences it. The most common sensations are a feeling that someone/something is sitting on your chest and you can’t move; sensations of floating out of your body/house; very lucid dreams that often are quite nightmarish; and a feeling of being completely paralyzed that requires a great deal of focus and determination to overcome and often leads to more lucid dreaming.

Throughout history there have been outbreaks of human abduction myths. In the beginning, the most common abductors were fairies, and trolls. Then demons and witches became the abductors, fueling the witch trials. Then extraterrestrial beings were the culprits. The abductors always seem to meet the mythology of the times. The lucid dreams that take place during sleep paralysis feel real. When you are having one, you don’t know you are dreaming. Often, you dream that you wake up, and then something horrible happens. You can’t move, so you can’t protect yourself. Or you won’t be able to move, so you try with everything you have to move, and you do – but it isn’t real, it is part of the dream. Vampires and monsters used to come and get me. After I was attacked, It was men coming to kill me.

My neighbor has a book that says the experiences aren’t bad. If you can become lucid enough during a dream, you can control you feelings, and have meaningful “out of body” experiences. I went with the idea. I would feel it coming on and float out of my body. It never lasted very long, though, and I was never truly convinced that I had actually left my body. It seemed possible, though. It is a definite detachment of the spirit and body. At least, it feels that way. It helped, however. I no longer feel the intense fear when I “feel one coming on.”

www.telegraph.co.uk
While most people don’t experience sleep paralysis, they can experience out of body sensations through normal dreaming. In dreams people often see themselves from the observer’s point of view. There are also stress situations when people feel they are seeing themselves from above or behind their body. Research has demonstrated how virtual reality induces out of body experiences. When people have these experiences, they don’t question them because humans have believed for thousands of years that there is a soul that survives death.

Philosophers and religious leaders have pondered the idea. The question is, what is consciousness? The fact that consciousness is so hard to explain feeds directly into the human notion of duality. Today, science is getting very close to explaining how the brain creates a sense of consciousness.

Humans have believed from the beginning that we are different from all other animals in respect to consciousness, but scientific research has shown that even pigeons demonstrate self awareness. It really doesn’t seem like that big a leap to believe that mind is a product of the brain. There is so much more evidence to support the science of mind is matter than the contention that a separate soul exists.

My grandmother is a perfect example of this. When she suffered brain damage, it was as if she had become a different person. Many people have experienced this with their loved ones who are afflicted with alzheimer’s disease. The phenomenon has also been studied at length with people who suffer brain injuries. It begs the question, if we have a soul that transcends body, then how does physical disease alter it?

I have come to believe that it’s easier to see the mind brain connection than the duality I once felt. I don’t remember anything before I was about 1 to 2 years old I don’t remember living any other lives, and I can’t fathom living forever. Heck, I can’t fathom forever.

Without duality, what is god for? So, I guess I’m back to atheism, again. But if it seems that obvious to me, why do so many people choose not to see it? Why are so many people troubled by my non-belief? They would ask, as my neighbor once did, "without god, how can you know what is moral?" I struggled with it then, but the answer is so obvious to me now.

From Rider to Prison in less than Three Months

I finally listened to my phone messages today. Friday, a message was left by the prosecuting office to let us know that Terry Dale Devereaux failed the rider program and is being moved to the penitentiary to serve out his 4-8 year prison sentence.

It's too bad, I had hoped he would be healed. It's also a relief. That means I won't have to worry about him for quite some time. Let's face it, if he couldn't make it half way through a six month rehabilitation program, how likely is it he will not have to serve out the entire 8 year prison sentence?

I can't really express what we are all feeling. These boys are actually being held accountable in a big way for what they did to Zach. We are all in a state of shock, I guess. We went from being told they had don't nothing wrong to this.

So, wow, I guess.

I want one of these!

Post Birthday Update

Yep, that's right. Yesterday was my birthday, and the only people who noticed were the people I told. But then, why should this birthday be any different from any other birthday. The kids wanted to go out to dinner, but I was so tired. So I guess we'll do it this weekend.

School started up again, and I have to go every day. Since riding the bus costs half of what driving everyday would cost, I have elected to ride the bus. I had to drop a class that was scheduled during travel home time, but that wasn't the hardest part. The hardest part is I have to get up at 4:45 a.m. to get dressed and get to the bus stop before 5:20. I haven't been able to sleep in a moving vehicle since I was a child, but I really need to work hard at getting there again. It's the only way I will survive. The two hour drive home will give me time to do my reading, and I have 5 hours on Mondays and Wednesdays to do research and stuff. Of course, I only have one class that has a research project assigned!

I am in a cognitive processes class that is being taught by the head of the psych department, my advisor. I think this will be a great class. Tough, but I bet a learn a ton. There are some really smart people in that class, and I have no delusion of being at the top of that class, so I will gladly take the passing grade I earn. Even if it doesn't have a pointy top.

The other psych class is Experimental Psychology. We are going to learn how to put together research projects and write the results. We get to pretend to be real researchers. This may be the class where I really learn about the research papers I've been reading.

I am in an into to Pilate's class. I will get in shape this semester, I won't be able to help myself. On the days I don't have Pilate's, I have to hurriedly climb up a hill and up 5 stories of stairs. Then I have to walk back down the hill to get to my next class. Going down is easy enough. Packing a 25 pound backpack up 4 flights of stars (for my painting class) and then up 5 flights of stairs (for cognitive psychology) is a work out.

My cognitive psychology class is sandwiched between my Painting class and a Sculpture calls. I will get a lot of painting done, and I will learn how to manipulate metal into artful shapes. I will get to learn how to cast bronze, and weld! I don't know, I think this semester is going to be a blast!

Oh, and I figured out how to get a ton of traffic to my blog! Post a lot of pictures! I get a lot of visits that come from google images. Take, pictures, and borrow pictures from other sites. I think the pictures should be of things that really represent what the blog is about so that the people want to keep coming back!

Also, Big news! I wrote about a murder that took place in Twin Falls in March. The local media did a really good job sensationalizing the incident, they informed us about the murderer who suicided, but absolutely said nothing about the woman except that she was nude and dumped over the bridge. KMVT even shot footage from across the canyon of her body while investigators gathered evidence around her. So I wrote a post to ask if anyone know who she was.

This past weekend, her sister and father found the post and have left a lot of really good comments about their beloved sister/daughter. She was a real person with a real life who was human and loved. Check it out.

I'm still working on those acquisition posts. They're a lot more complicated than I thought they would be, and I don't want them to feel or sound like homework. This blog isn't homework!

Acquisition 2: Usher in the New Age

www.1-inspirational-quote-book.com/bluestarz.jpgMy atheism was on shaky ground. My neighbor and I became friends and she introduced me to some new age views of spirituality. She and I were discussing the realm of morality. I was expressing my belief in the sanctity of life (one should not kill) and she asked me how I knew what was moral and what was not if there was no god. I didn’t know how to answer her then, but I will answer in a later post. She wasn’t saying the Abrahamic God was the one true god, but that our spirit has a higher purpose for us in life. It sounded pretty good to me. I tried on some of those beliefs and values.

www.writespirit.net/religious_traditions/buddhism/Daibutsu-Buddha.jpgOprah had Gary Zukav on her show several times and he made sense to me. I read Seat of the Soul, and developed my spirituality. I tried to find out as much as I could about Buddhism. I even had a couple of e-mail pals who were Buddhists. One was Chinese and could barely speak English, the other in Australia and didn’t know what to write about Buddhism except that it wasn’t really a religion, just a philosophy of life. Buddhism is practiced differently around the world. In some places, it really is a religion with gods and all, and in some places, it is a philosophy. I suppose I should read something written by the Dali Lama.

www.art-mind-soul.com/003-Yin-yang.enlarge.jpgI was working with profoundly disabled children at that time. These are children who never give up and have a strength of spirit that you don’t see anywhere else. If there was/is a god, surely they are the closest people to it. It is the only place in my life where I have been unconditionally accepted. It is from these children that I learned what unconditional acceptance really means. If you don’t know, the only way to learn is to get to know someone who is severely mentally disabled.

www.cms.edu/Spirituality.gifThe internet has been my greatest source of information for the past three or four years. It is a fast and unrivaled medium in which to share belief systems with people all over the world. I chased down leads on spirituality through the Near Death Experience web site. It sounded beautiful and perfect to me. The teachers of new age spirituality, however, left much to be desired. They seem to suffer from the same self righteous mentality that I saw in the Christians I was so angry with. www.vibrakeys.com/welcome/Vk25-3.75updt.jpg

I started this blog to document my travels toward knowing. Spiritual Journey documents what I learned about the new age teachers I found on the internet. I toyed with what it might be like to be god in Lonely Dreamer. I read a few books, and finally realized that the path of new age spirituality was a dead end. I wrote about what I learned reading about Richard Rose in Misguided Pupil, and my disappointment in what I was learning about new age spiritual leaders in Enlightenment. www.hermeticfellowship.org/Graphics/Images/GWilliams/BirthPainting.jpg

They seem to have an existential view of being. Thy talk about how people aren’t living and that everything they think they know is an illusion. In order to be, one must stop living the lie of their existence. I can agree with this to the extent that people rely on cognitive heuristics so much in life that they never doubt that they are not cognizant enough to know why thy believe what they do.

One of my most unpleasant experiences was an online altercation I had with a man named Eddie Traversa who insisted that all parents who take their children to see Santa were abusive parents. I disagreed with him and he ended up telling me, in so many words, that I was too stupid to know what I was talking about, and if I took my kids to see Santa, I was a long way from being “enlightened”. It was this altercation that ended my search for new age spirituality. I wrote about my state of mind at the time in Synchronicity. www.moonstonenewage.co.uk/images/crystal.jpg

My duality was still strong, however, and I didn’t give up on my own spirit. I didn’t believe there was a god that created everything; I just believed that God was the energy that flows through the universe. God was an all accepting all loving energy. In fact, by any religious definition, God wasn’t really a God.

www.trueu.org/images/artimgs/lhnewage_lrg.jpgThe answer to the question changed to: “I am an Agnostic.” It’s a fairly safe place to be. Flip flopping back and forth, waxing and waning atheism, and refusing to make up my mind couldn’t last, however. I needed to understand more. I needed to know why I felt the duality that kept me from making a choice.

Acquisition 1: Left Behind

There was no tragic fall from grace; no crisis tore me from faith. I didn’t turn away from God. As a matter of fact, I chased after God, begging for acceptance and love. But I never found the peace that everyone else sang about. I was left behind.

My mother was an atheist. She didn’t speak against God. She didn’t speak of God at all. She just didn’t believe. She never told me why she didn’t believe. I don’t know if she was brought up without religion and just stayed that way, much as I have, or whether she had some kind of crisis that tore grace from her. I wasn’t brought up to hate God, God just was never there.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Religious_symbolWhen I was in the 6th grade, I was doing a group project with some of the “it” kids. They were talking about going to church. The question was: “what are you?” There was a catholic, there was a mormon, etc. I dreaded my turn. I didn’t know what I was. “Christian.” I said as quietly as I could. One boy said, “of course you’re a Christian, everyone is a Christian!” This sparked some debate between the other kids, and I was off the hook. I still didn’t know what I was; I just knew I was no longer the focus of the discussion.

Just before my mother and step father divorced, he started attending a church in town. It was one of those born again Christian churches, and he was really into it. I wanted to go, and my mother didn’t have a problem in the world with it. I went for a while, but I never felt like I fit in. It was hard to fit into a church where the people so openly hated an entire group of people (Mormons) because they were different.

http://www.ulcseminary.org/oscommerce/catalog/images/ReligiousPhilosophySlide3_4.JPGOne of the things they used to tell me to do when I told them about the questions I had about my faith, and doubt, was to close my eyes while holding a bible in my hands, pray for guidance and let the book open on its own. With my eyes still closed, point to a place on the open page and read the passage (with open eyes – and heart), and my prayer would be answered and doubts would be eased. There must be something about the way my bible was constructed. Every time I did that little exercise, the book opened to Deuteronomy (it still does even today!). It is impossible to convince a girl who grew up in an abusive home to believe in the God responsible for Deuteronomy. My doubts multiplied, and my faith waned. So, I quit going, and no one missed me.

When I was 19, I went to a seventh day Adventist church with a co-worker. They spoke a lot about revelations and how only a very small percentage of people would be saved. These people also were quick to point out how all of the heathens who went to other churches (especially mormons) would not be saved. The rules of conduct to be included in the saved group were far beyond my capabilities. Once again, I didn’t feel as if I really fit in, and I quit going. No one missed me.

When Megan and Zach were in elementary school, a big bus would drive around town and pick up kids to take to church. It seemed harmless enough, and Megan and Zach seemed to really enjoy it. Then, on Easter, the kids brought home a flyer that said if a parent came to church with the kids on Easter Sunday, they would be given a free ham. The cupboard was bare, and Easter services always seemed hopeful when I had gone to church in the past. The people who came to talk to me were so nice and so friendly, like a family welcoming me into the fold. I decided it would be fun to go.

www.modernartimages.com/images/spiritual/religious-drawing-havemercy.jpgAt the church, the kids were separated from the parents to go to their special Sunday school classes and the parents were treated to a sermon telling us how reprobate we all were and that we’d best change our ways, or we would be damned to hell. Then, the women hauled me up to the front of the church to pray for me, and they began “speaking in tongues”, chanting and crying and wailing. I have never been more frightened in my whole life. I begged God to let me leave the service alive and with my children in exchange for my promise to never go back myself, and to not let my children go back either. It worked. I kept my promise. I wasn’t missed, but my kids were.

My doubt continued to grow. I started looking at religion and those who follow it in a more inquisitive light. My biggest question was if God isn’t real, then why do so many people believe? I searched for answers in archeological articles, and found reason to believe that God didn’t create man, man created god. But how could that be the definitive answer? How hopeless is that answer?

http://www.angelcrafts.net/religious6_files/religious6.jpgChristians are an interesting lot. Just as in all walks of life and areas of beliefs, some are very good, very kind people. But I have known many who were extremely hypocritical and judgmental. I wondered how someone could believe so completely they were right about something so unprovable. Of course, their belief was strongest when pointing a finger at others than when looking in a mirror at themselves. It made me so angry to see people who preached loving and giving behave with such contempt, especially when they could justify their contempt with a passage in the bible. My anger eventually generalized to religion.

I began to hate religion. I blamed the three Abrahamic religions for all of the problems in this world. Three factions fighting each other, killing, maiming, and torturing innocent people for a subjective belief about an idea that cannot be proven. Three Factions of people who expect the world to fall in line with “their” god – Abraham’s God – a God who told a man to kill his own son. www.mainelli.com/large_photos/religious_c.jpgOnly a God in the mind of a schizophrenic man would do such a thing. I decided that if God was really like that, I would prefer to burn in hell for an eternity than spend one day in heaven with Him.

For a while, then, the answer to the question was: “I am an atheist.” I, however, like most humans, could not shake the feeling that I have a soul separate from my body. That dualism led me down another path of spirituality.

I survived! though, I don't much smell like I did!

Leather Jacket - charcoal on newsprint 2008I accidentally started my word processor. I was going to play yet another game of slide tiles, but I missed the games icon and hit the word icon. A horrible sense of anxiety ripped through my overstuffed gut. I haven’t even looked at the word processor without disdain since the mad dash to finals week. I don’t like this feeling. I love to write, and I don’t want to associate aversive conditions to a medium that has typically brought me great joy and comfort.

balancing boxes - charcoal on newsprint 2008I survived the semester. There really isn’t much of a difference between a B+ and an A- so I am going to be happy with it. The other three grades were As, so I did good. It was a bitch of a semester, though. I think I may have had too many extra curricular subjects pulling at me. But the strangest thing to happen was some crazy mental block when taking multiple choice tests. I don’t have problems taking multiple choice tests. It better be temporary.

Research posits that thinking too much about something can cause you to do poorly. That is probably it. I remember how I handled it in high school. I got drunk before the geometry quiz, and that was when I finally *got* proofs. I wonder what my advisor would think if I showed up for the first test with an altered mood? Hmmmm.

My art teacher thinks I have potential. Wow, he hasn’t even seen the best of my art yet!

Liberty Lost - charcoal on newsprint 2008Zach is counting down the final days of the Bush administration. Huckabee scares the wits out of me. Well, the wits I have left anyway.

Megan’s best (girl) friend is engaged and Megan is the Maid of Honor! I have a very strong feeling that Megan will be needing one soon herself!

Floating Mouse - charcoal on newsprint 2008Christmas came again, sort of. No tree, no presents (except the lottery tickets my dad got us – we all won! Me=$10, Megan=$15, Zach=$20). I made game hens for dinner, my present to everyone. They sucked. Maybe I should just stick with turkey.
Mountainscape - Ink on paper 2008
I feel much better about writing now. It is fun when it isn’t for a grade. I shall begin work on my series about what I have learned this year. Ooooh, betcha can’t wait for that!

All I really want is a couple days here!By they way, I closed my eyes and thought hard about what it is I really want. The results didn’t have anything to do with school. I still don’t know what I really aught to do, but I have signed up for psych classes this spring, so that’s what I’ll be doing. Special Education will always be there. I personally think that what I am in school for now is more relevant to teaching profoundly disabled students than learning about Idaho history, but that’s just me. I still don’t feel really good about it all right now, but things always have a way of turning out. It’s strange really, just like me.Self Portrait - charcoal on newsprint 2008

2000 Visits

I got my 2000th hit (since getting statcounter on Feb. 5, 2007) today. I got my 1000th hit in July. It truly surprises me that I would be getting as many visits as I have, especially considering how little I have written lately. Yes, 2000 hits since February seems sparse compared to more popular bloggers. Some get that many in just one day! I don't ever plan for this blog to be that popular, but I like to track which pages people are looking at.

Which pages are people looking at? Well, I'm glad you asked.

10. Why a degree is important to me has been viewed a lot. I never sent the application because I couldn't get CSI to get me the transcripts I had to have in time. I wonder if it has helped some of the people who have looked at it.

9. Synchronicity was a post I wrote when I realized that some of the new-age spiritual "teachers" didn't have any more answers than any other spiritual "teacher".

8. Go Packers was a post I wrote because my favorite football team is having a remarkable season this year. I wonder what kind of traffic I could get if I were more of a sports writer. I don't think I care to find out.

7. Have you seen this alien is one of my favorite posts. I'm glad people look at it! I never get comments, but I wonder what they think. They are usually looking for someone who has seen a real alien, not just some reflection.

6. Can you see auras was one of those silly quizzes I like so much. I have a feeling people are looking for people who can really see auras, just like people were looking for people who really see aliens. I guess if I wanted a lot of traffic on my web site, writing a lot about new age spirituality and conspiracy theories would be a great way to go. But how boring would that be?

5. How big can my problems be was a post I wrote when I was still reeling from the ordeal Zach was going through. Most of the visits happened on one day by one person. They googled images and liked these pictures, I guess.

4. I'm not going to kid you. I knew when I wrote the post title, that premature e-jaculation would be getting some visits. I don't know if people know that I used the term to indicate I posted too soon about whether Terry Devereaux would be paying for his crime. I had found out on this day that there actually was a law he could be charged with. And now, he is spending time in a treatment facility. If he can't complete it successfully, he will spend the next eight years in prison for hurting Zach.

3. I took several of on line personality tests last summer for my theories of personality class. The advanced global personality test is the most popular of the tests.

2. I am still getting a lot of traffic on this post. This past spring, a woman was murdered and thrown off the Perrine bridge. Our local media didn't seem to care who she was, but I couldn't just let it go. I needed to know if anyone out there knew Kimberly Ann Payton. I am still getting a lot of traffic from California. A little while ago, someone commented that she had fought with her boyfriend that night and went out to let off steam. It is one of the most tragic events I have ever heard of. I know she had a lot of family and friends out there who really loved her and miss her terribly. I'm sure they are all missing her this holiday season.

And the post that got the most hits?
1. Happy one month anniversary sweety. That's right, no one will let me forget. Well, I guess I can't say I'm sorry it all happened. It really was fun at first, and I did learn something about myself. Hopefully, it is something I won't be repeating.

So, there it is. I do like my blog, and I do plan to write more now that the semester is over. I didn't get all As this time around. That's right, I got a B+. I shouldn't be upset, there are a lot of people out there that would love to have my gpa. They can't have it though. And I do have to write about what I learned. It is difficult to write it, I seem to be having a really hard time explaining it in a way people can understand. I will give it a shot, though, soon.

Until then......Happy Holidays.

Bleck

It has really been a while, hasn't it? I have been struggling quite a bit lately. I have been discouraged by one of my psych classes. I don't know, I guess it is me because other students seem to be doing well, but I am really struggling on the tests.

I have been wondering a lot lately if psychology is what I should be here for. I am thinking that special education is what I should be doing. It is what I loved for the past 13 years. It is something I know I am good at, and I know I can make a difference. Let's face it, I can get the sped degree and have enough time left to do something with it.

I don't think I have enough years left in me to make any real difference in psychology. The kind of research I would want to be a part of would take some serious longitudinal studies, and lets face it, 20 years may not cover it. I will be hitting my 50s by the time I could get a PhD.

Unless someone figures out how to fix the aging gene in time!

Thanksgiving was Thanksgiving this year. Turkey, the best stuffing in the world, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. And three term papers. Yeah, it was loads of fun. And Zach turned 20 a couple of days before turkey day.

Now, winter solstice is upon us. Nothing would make me happier than to hibernate for a few months. My mind is as slow as molasses. (not my mouth, just my mind!) A Christmas tree awaits assembly. I still have three more term papers to write. They are due next week. Then finals. Where will I find the energy?

One of my term papers is a behavior mod program to get me running again. Apparently, I have gained enough weight to make running physically harmful. So I have had to make it a walk, which will eventually turn into a run. I tried a small amount of running last night, ankle wanted to act up again. Well, I did it before, I can do it again.

You know, usually when I feel like this I try to write something profound, some kind of prose. I'm just not up to it yet.

So that's where I am. No wonder I haven't written. I have nothing good to say.

Criminal Profiling = Cold Reading

This week, the New Yorker published an article about criminal profiling written by Malcom Gladwell. The article has been linked to many times by prominent skeptical bloggers, so I was prompted to read what the whole hubub was about.

As you may recall, I took a sexual abuse of humans class taught by an ex-FBI agent. He taught the psychological profiling used by the FBI profilers at quantico as though it is a scientific fact. The class was and continues to be offered at ISU as a psychology credit class, so I assumed it was based on something valid. Apparently, it isn't.

The article in the New Yorker states that criminal profiling is nothing more than the cold readings that your typical psychics and palm readers use to fool people into believing in a connection to some mystical magical world. Robert Todd Carroll adds more insight into how people come to deceive themselves into believing these cold readings/profiles.

Apparently, criminal profiling is not scientific enough to be used in the courtrooms of the UK, or the US. Profiling is not a scientific process, nor does it stand up to scientific scrutiny. It is based on the gut feelings of the FBI officers who promote it. (Alison 2002)

One of my most directed questions of that semester was, if you can profile the crime scene and get a suspect out of it, then why can't you profile the offender before the crime is committed? I now have my answer. You can't profile the crime scene accurately and scientifically.

That is the rule of science. It has to give you the tools to make accurate predictions, and criminal profile is a long way from even being close. That doesn't mean we should throw the baby out with the bathwater, however.

If scientists would do accurate prison studies of enough murderers and rapists, they could generate better profiling data. I have no doubt that all of these criminals share some early childhood experiences that would shout "here is where it came from!" I continue to argue that we can prevent the crimes in the first place if we can stop the maladaptive teaching that takes place early in life.

I feel like I wasted time and money in that class now. I think I will chat with the department head about it and show her the science that refutes the validity of that class. Nothing good ever comes from misinformation.

Justice served

Today Jacob Torres-Vasquez had his day in court. He tried to say that he was innocent in the incident, that he tried to get talk Terry into taking Zach to the hospital and that he only put cigarettes out on Zach's arm to show Terry that Zach was really out of it.

What a load of crap.

His mother was there. I felt really sorry for her. She didn't look at Zach or me like we were evil monsters who were trying to take her child from her. As a matter of fact, I really think she was glad that Zach was ok, and not just because that meant that Jake wasn't being sentenced for 2nd degree murder. She told the judge that she tried to keep Jake from being friends with Terry because she knew Terry's mother was horrible, and was known to buy drugs and alcohol for Terry and his friends.

Jake got pretty much the same sentence as Terry. His lawyer tried to get it down to probation, but the judge thought that would be way to easy.

Terry's mother? I asked the prosecutor once again to make her pay. I told how Judy intimidated Zach at Terry's sentencing and how she and I exchanged words in the parking lot afterwards. I don't understand why she isn't being held accountable. She is more culpable that any of them. Terry wouldn't be messed up the way he is if not for her. I don't know - I think she needs to pay. She absolutely has not conscience.

They said they were looking into it.

Good people are dying, some aren't even born. Evolution doesn't hate waste, she's proof of that. I really can't imagine what purpose she could possibly have that would make this world a better place. But it is not my place to make such decisions. Apparently, she still has a part to play in this world, for good or ill.

It is possible that I have watched/read LOTR a few too many times. Sounds like something fun to do this week while I don't have class! I will get my meta theory paper done, and my test and measurement paper as well.

I'm going to bed now.

Go Packers!

Green Bay Packers are on a role this year, and I couldn't be happier. I had decided that with their eminent demise as evidenced by the past few seasons, that I would be a Seattle Seahawks fan instead. Makes sense, Seattle isn't that far from where I live. But this year, the Packers have recaptured my heart. Brett looks as good as ever, and I mean his playing too, not just his...

Anyway, 34-0. Of course Fox thought the game was boring and switched it in the 3rd quarter to the Eagles - yuk! So I went out and burned branches in the back yard for the rest of the day.

I got contact lenses yesterday. I love them. I'm not supposed to wear them all the time yet, so the glasses I hate so much are still on my face. By next week though, contacts all the way!

I never really get to study the iris of my eye when I'm wearing glasses. It is distorted and there is always glare. Without the glasses I couldn't see well enough. I put the contacts on yesterday and really got a good look. I can't believe how much they have changed over the past few years. I used to have quite a bit of brown right around the pupil, but now that has really lightened up and is more gold. I have some black specks here and there where I thought I had dark brown spots. My eyes are green now. I imagine in a few years they will be gray. I guess that genetics stuff isn't set in stone.

The novel: I have three papers to write over fall break next week. I have been studying for two tests this week. I had to clean the back yard up or the city was going to throw me in jail. They don't care that my son, who has autism, likes to collect things. Ok, so most of the things he likes to collect are things most people throw away. They look interesting to him, so he collects them, and he has more time to collect them than I have to throw them away. Besides, it is easier to get him to agree to throw things away when the city is sending us threatening letters.

Anyway, I have been to busy to give the novel the kind of justice it needs. I picked a story that means something to me, so I want to do it right. And November is an arbitrary time frame. I will continue the novel between semesters, and in the summer. I think I might actually have something worth the effort here.

Gotta go, I'll be late for my next class!

I Got a New Stove

The old one barely worked. The oven stopped working just before summer, which didn't bother me much because I don't bake in the summer. Two of the burners worked (the small ones) one of the large ones didn't work at all, and the other big one needed some prompting from time to time. So I really needed another stove. This one is my first brand new stove. It is bottom of the line, no self cleaning, no timer. But it works, and that's all that matters.

I didn't think it would ever get here, though. I bought it on October 20, and I just got it last night.

So what was the first thing we baked? Digiorno Pizza. Well, it was late when it got here, and Zach had been craving frozen pizza for some time. Apparently he wanted brownies too, he baked a batch last night and has already eaten them all. Today I roasted Chicken, Tomorrow a roast.

I want to bake so many things, but I better not do it all at once. Besides, Thanksgiving is coming, I can do it then.

Robot Car

Oh, sure, I could pay the $750/semester to ride the bus to Pocatello for classes. However, I think It would work better for me to have this car. That way, I have the freedom of choosing my own time schedule while have the opportunity to study during travel times.

Ok, here goes...Dear Universe, I demand that you give me one of these cars right now!

I just looked out the window, and it didn't work. Or, as one of my favorite circular arguments goes - the answer was no.

Maybe next time.

Thank You, Dear Cheerleaders!

5406 words is what I have written to date. I'm even a little ahead of schedule. It really doesn't take long to write a couple thousand words once you get a rhythm going. What helps the most is channeling your characters. I didn't think the nurse was ever going to introduce herself to me. Last night I dreamt about the boyfriend. He really is a really swell guy. I am looking forward to seeing how he affects the situation. Maybe I'll go back a little and try to fix the uncomfortable scene I was trying to write about that first day. I can probably get another 500 words just out of that.

I think I need to do a little research and see what kind of group homes are available around here for very young mothers. I don't see how we aren't going to end up there. (In my novel)

I'm having fun. I have even had time to research consciousness and neuroscience for my metatheory of psychology. Consciousness is still the one thing no one seems to be able to agree on. I'm thinking the human brain is like the computer, only it evolved to work so much better and be so much more productive. Well traveled freeways to hard to follow bunny paths. Neural pathways traveled at the release and reuptake of a variety of neurotransmitters. So much more complex than today's computers, and so much more evolved. I don't think computers can have a stream of consciousness with the digital matrix. I could be wrong, but I really think you have to have the analog format to have a linear stream of consciousness. Just a thought to put in my paper. I have to research it, though, just in case someone else said it first. Must give credit where credit is due!

It feels good to finally be putting this novel into words. The characters have been sulking in my consciousness (the imagination part of it) for about 6 years now. My heroin changed the color of her hair, and her boyfriend became much more respectable. Vanessa is just about what I thought she'd be.

I tried to update my nanowrimo profile page, but their site is down. I wonder if they are now questioning the sanity of switching everything around a month before it had to work. It isn't working, so I bet they are. I'll keep writing anyway. It seems to be helping my mood a bit.

Nanowrimo update

Nanowrimo started yesterday. I tried so hard to get started, but by the time the day was done I only had about 800 words. Things went a little better today, and I have my two days worth. My nanowrimo stats aren't working right now. I guess they are having some kind of hardships with their sight. It is soooooooo slow right now.

The hardest part of the novel was writing about the relationship between my heroin and her boyfriend. I guess I don't remember how it is supposed to work anymore. It has been a long time already. It has been over a year since I have even been on a date. I am busy.

It is late now and I am so tired, so please excuse any nonsense you read in this post. It is all nonsense to me right now.

Classes are going good, really. I have an A in my art class, which is cool, and liberates me to really let loose. My Measurement and Test construction teacher thinks I'm awesome, and I think my History of Psych professor thinks I'm ok to. I have A in all three of those classes right now, which is so awesome. I need to focus on them.

I am actually having a blast in the History of Psychology class. That's right, it's history and I'm loving it. I actually am quite interested in history. But this class is so much fun.

It is the Psyc of learning class that bogs me down. I have a b. I don't know if I will be able to get it up to an a, but I am going to try. I'm just not going to beat myself up over it.

So, want to know what I am writing? I'm not sure yet really, but here is a couple of excerpts. Yes, it does seem a little depressing. Yes, my heroin is sitting on a ledge planning to jump to her death. Yes, the story will be about why she is there, and whether she will jump or not. I still don't know how it will end, and I have been kicking it around in my head for a long time.

The hedges died long ago. Their corpses, black and biting, still tower above me. The bristly branches are hopelessly intertwined. The ground is cold and barren, and littered with shards of broken dreams. Even the sky no longer lends light to the path.

I’ve been trapped in this maze my whole life. I wander from pathway to pathway, only to be blocked over and again. I call out to the voices I can hear just on the other side. They answer, but make no sense. My courage wanes and all hope recedes into the dark clouds above.

It is a treacherous thing to be lost and forgotten. No comfort comes to a solitary soul. A corner is turned and the way seems clear. The last of the steps are inevitably met with disappointment and pain. Surviving is to be forever trapped in pain and loneliness and hopelessness, unguided, unheard, unloved.

Today the path has brought me here, to the rim of a deep gorge. I am sitting on the edge, prepared to leap into the abyss. I wonder if help will come. Will anyone see me sitting here? Will anyone care? I no longer burden myself with hope.

The wind is warm as it strokes my face. I can feel the heat rising from the dark rocks below. I peer over the edge and look to the bottom. It doesn’t really seem that far, but I know that my eyes are deceiving me. It is the length of two and a half foot ball fields from here to the floor of the canyon.

Basalt boulders litter the floor of the canyon, but from here they look like skipping stones. Grasses poke up around them, and colorful wildflowers are sprinkled about. The sounds of the river are just barely audible because of the wind hitting my ears.

A red tailed hawk is spiraling higher and higher, riding the thermals as though he has no cares in the world. I wonder what it would be like to be him. He hunts for his dinner, and stays out of the way of danger when possible. Does he ever contemplate the meaning of his existence? Does he ever chide himself for failing to take the right paths? Does he miss his offspring when they are gone?

He is close enough now that I can see his flight feathers reacting to the small updrafts in the heat currents. He doesn’t even seem to notice me sitting here. His grace and strength are beautiful to behold. His head cocks from one side to another. I wonder if he is sensing mice below.

I am jolted out of my thoughts when he cries out. I wonder if he was directing his scream at me. He is so beautiful, and graceful. So beautiful.

Can you see auras?

My neighbor says she has a friend who can. Of course, there is no evidence that she really can, so it could just be delusional thinking. I suspect it is because she doesn't always get it right.

Casdok had this little quiz on her blog, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

Caught in the Speed Trap

I got stopped for speeding this morning. I was speeding. I was supposed to be driving 55, but I was going 65, and there was a state police officer in wait. A soon as I saw him, I knew I'd been had.

It was really stupid too. I set the cruise control on 79 (I know it should be 75, but they usually don't waste their time on anything under 6 miles over), and I keep it there for the whole drive. After the Chubbuck exit it changes to 65, so I cruise that speed until I get to the SLC exit. The freeway is under construction past the Clark street exit, but the speed limit changes to 55 right at the exit, and I knew that. It had been such an easy drive this morning, and I really wasn't trying to speed. I wasn't late. As a matter of fact, I was earlier than I thought I would be. There wasn't much traffic and I wasn't paying attention to how fast I was going.

So I got pulled over. It took me forever to find my registration in my car pouch. I have so many maintenance receipts. I finally found it in the most obvious place, the insurance pouch. I gave it to the officer, he went back to his car, and I waited for him to write the ticket. In no time at all he was back. Wanted to know how many days I drive all the way to ISU from Twin, I told him the two days, and he handed my license and registration back to me. He said that the speed limit was 55 and that I should be more aware of my speed. No ticket! NO TICKET! I looked him in the eye and thanked him. I was ready to get my punisher, but no! It was a negative reinforcer that I intend to pay great attention to.

How silly is it to follow the rules for 130 miles, then the last two blow it for nothing? I will definitely be paying more attention from now on!

He was kind of cute. He thought the smell of styrofoam was strong in my car. I had some styrofoam shapes that I took to drawing class. I couldn't even smell it. I still can't believe he didn't give me a ticket. that was so nice.

P.S. My art teacher doesn't hate my work so much after all. my midterm grade is an A.

Justice at Work

We went to Terry Dale Devereaux's sentencing today. His mother was there, and immediately went to work on intimidating Zach. I told her to leave him alone. Then I got to say some things to the judge, something like since Zach and Terry were in school, Zach has always been his friend. When Terry was getting out of Juvenile detention, it was Zach he looked up to be his friend, and turned it against Zach. I said he immediately started "grooming" his victim, turned our lives upside down over the past 10 months, and almost killed Zach in the process. I told the judge about the cat scans and the night at the ER. I told him that I agreed with the state that Terry needed help. What he did to Zach showed just how malicious he could be. I said I think he should pay for what he did to Zach, but that society needs to be protected from him as well. That Terry's criminal career wasn't over, by any means.

I left out the part about Terry showing how little regard he had for life. I really wanted to say that, but I forgot when the time came.

So here it is: 8 years, 4 years fixed, sentence set aside upon successful completion of the program at Cottonwood. It is called a retained jurisdiction commitment. I guess he has to spend six months in therapy to be recondition to be a productive member of society. If he does complete the program successfully, he will be set free on probation, but will serve the full term if he does anything illegal while on probation. If he doesn't complete the program successfully, he serves the 4 years fixed.

It's ok, if the re-programming works. Although, even if he successfully completes the program, if he is released to the care of his mother it will all be unlearned all to quickly. So I guess I'll have to show up to the 6 month hearing to let them know how dangerous it would be to set him free with her. She aught to love that.

We were in the courtroom when Terry's "girlfriend" came in. That just gave Judy the warm and fuzzies, I guess, because she started smiling and laughing and looking at me as if she had just won. It was weird. So when Zach and I were heading for the car, we passed the group and once again, she smiled at me. I looked at her and asked her "why are you so happy all of a sudden?" Terry's "girlfriend" told me to just keep walking and don't say anything. (Zach couldn't get to the car fast enough - or I would have stopped at this point. He was safely out of sight, so....) Yeah, right.

Judy started in, I don't remember what she said, it was weird, so I told her that I intend to see to it she pays for her part in it. I told her that it is illegal to buy vodka for under-aged people, and that she was just as responsible for what happened as Terry. She started coming at me, screaming "You just couldn't keep your mouth shut in their could you? You just had to say those things about him, didn't you?"

"Yes, I did!" I said. Then she started failing her arms as though she wanted to hit me. I think she was trying to get me to flinch or something. He father got in front of her, Terry's girlfriend was behind her, and they were trying to get her under control. Once I realized they weren't going to let her hit me (darn it!) I taunted her. "Go ahead, hit me! Hit me NOW!" I said to her. She backed off, but had to call me a pig.

No, I didn't call her a crack whore. I don't know why. I do know that this isn't over. I will check in with the prosecutor and see what is happening with Judy. She really needs to be prosecuted for her part in it. Then, maybe I'll have just that much more to add at the six month hearing.

Yes, she is one of those mothers who feel her son shouldn't be held responsible for what he does to others. But by God he had better not turn on her!

I really hope that the program works for Terry. He is currently on the fast track to serial fame. He will end up killing someone if something doesn't intervene and turn him around. If it doesn't help, I have no doubt I am on his short list for possible murder victims. Wait, no, he knows I fight back. He wouldn't be brave enough to face me down like that. He would find an innocent woman to take his frustration out on. Unless he figures he's done something stupid and is going to have to go to prison any way, so why not take the bitch out first. I don't know if he would ever come after Zach. I don't think he sees Zach as being responsible for this. I'm the one who made him pay. Well, I have six whole months to not have to worry.
